Written by Dan Ekblad, IAWP CWC, CPT

Over the last few months all you have been hearing about is CBD oil and Hemp products everywhere you go. There are small shops opening up all over most cities, and the ease of purchasing CBD products online is big business.

In July of last year, I had been hearing more and more about CBD oil and all the things it can do for you. Suffering from chronic pain and sleepless nights, I wanted something to help me manage these areas of my life.

Gym Etiquette 2018

It is that time of the year when all gyms are often filled to capacity with all the New Year's Resolution-ers—you know, the vast majority of people who start going to the gym after New Year's Day and usually stop going by the end of February. Personally, I have never had a issue with those who are looking to get in shape, lose those extra pounds and really try when they are at the gym. Sure, you can't find an open treadmill or bench to save your life, but you know in the back of your mind, this too shall pass. The things that get to me, and other regulars of a gym, are those who just do not have any common sense or "gym etiquette."

Gym etiquette is something that is not much different from let's say "golf etiquette."

Think Before You Buy That Drink

As I wrote in my last post, Are You Suffering From Dehydration?, over 75% of Americans are dehydrated. That means that the majority of you are not consuming nearly enough water daily. This leads to overeating, which leads to weight gain, sugar cravings, and fatigue, just name a few of the issues that come with not drinking enough water. I emphasize the word water, because if you are drinking soda, juice or coffee, you are not drinking water.
I want to make one thing clear about coffee...it does not count as water!

Coffee has been around for a long time, some say back to the 11th Century. Coffee was a staple in most Americans' lives since coming over to America. And until about 20 years ago, it was served the same way...black!

Are You Suffering From Dehydration?

Written by Dan Ekblad, IAWP CWC, CPT

Many people ask me, "How can I lose weight and start getting healthy?" My answer has become, drink more water!

Did you know that 75% of Americans are suffering from dehydration? Did you know you should be drinking at least one half of your body weight in ounces of water a day? Example: If you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink at least 75 oz of water a day. I recommend drinking in ounces what you weigh. In this case, it would be 150 oz a day. This will do a number of different things for you. First, it fills you up. Second, it helps stop food cravings. Third, it helps flush toxins from your body. And finally, you will feel more awake and less tired throughout the day. These are just some examples of the benefits of being hydrated.

Watching the show "Fit to Fat to Fit" has me thinking about the number of reasons I have gotten so involved in heath coaching and personal training the last couple of years. Watching these trainers who have been fit most of, if not all of, their lives struggle to pack on 40-50 pounds in a 4-month time period is hard to watch. But for those of us who have been overweight more than a few times in our lives, watching just how sick eating poorly makes these trainers is absolutely cringe worthy.

Be Proud of Your Battle Scars

Be proud of your battle scars, you earned them. (Yes, I have stretchmarks and loose skin...so what?)

One of the biggest issues that many of us who were once very large, either by being pregnant or just big and fat, are those lovely little reminders left on our bodies, stretchmarks and loose hanging skin. And ladies, trust me, it's not just you women who have these issues. Men too have the same issues as women, except we can't proudly claim we had a baby. We have to own up to the fact we were just big and fat! Believe it our not, we men are just as vain about having stretchmarks as women.

Women proudly call them their "tiger stripes" and take ownership of those marks. But still, many women feel embarrassed or ashamed to wear a bikini or clothing that may show off those areas. Men who were once bigger and may have that loose skin or stretch marks may never want to take off their shirts in public, and many don't even want to undress in private in front of their spouses.

Why am I writing about this touchy subject?

Because I have these issues.

Avoid Taking It to the Extreme

One of the biggest problems we face today is the “I want it now” mentality and wanting to take the easiest and quickest way to get there. “Let's take things to the extreme so it happens fast, because I want it right now!”

With TV shows like ABC's Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition and NBC’s The Biggest Loser, people think they can easily drop a lot of weight in a short amount of time.

The JDI Method: How to Get Yourself to Exercise

8/7/2017

Written by Jen Ekblad, ACE CPT, WMS

Let me set the scene—I’m talking with Annie, my amazing therapist, about overcoming the burning hatred I have for the gym; Actually, I strongly dislike exercise in general. I know, I know. I am a personal trainer. How can I hate exercise? Well let me break it down for you; fitness and nutrition professionals are not automatically exercise fanatics or immune to obesity simply because of their knowledge and credentials. I explained to Annie that absolutely nothing is motivating me to get exercising. And to make it more complicated, when I do try to use weight loss as a motivation to exercise, I actually gain more weight! What is going on?

Let’s rewind to 2013. As many of you know, in 2013 I trained really hard for a fitness bikini competition. I lost too much weight too quickly. I realized after the fact that I was training for this competition out of anger. I was angry at those who said I couldn’t reach my goals and I was angry at myself for always being overweight. After competition, I became a certified personal trainer and learned about proper fitness and nutrition. Even though I had this knowledge, I didn’t realize that I was still holding on to that anger and it had become a HUGE road block in my success. I slowly gained all of the weight back, and then I gained some more. Over time, I had developed a burning hatred for the gym and couldn’t get myself to exercise.

What’s #projectHEALTHYISH? It’s about stopping being so hard on yourself and just trying to be a little bit better than you were the day before.
I’ve always been interested in “fashion.” I put that in quotes, because I’m not sure the blue corduroy jumper I picked out for my first day of kindergarten, with my super short haircut, actually qualifies as high-quality and tasteful. Shopping with my mom and thinking about how you can pair different things, how to stand out (in a good way), stay comfortable, and how to transfer the latest Hollywood fashions to not look ridiculous in Wisconsin have all been things I’ve loved as long as I can remember. I loved the “Shop ‘til you Drop Shirt” I got when I was about five. I like to think that my interest in clothing has developed over the years. It’s no longer so much about standing out, but more about finding the right things that make me feel good.

Pro-carbs & Eating on the Go

Written by Jen Bailey, ACE CPT

Do you travel for work and find it challenging to eat healthy? Dan and I have been in your shoes and we are here to help! First and foremost, we recommend investing in a cooler or a meal management bag, such as Six Pack Bags (click on the Bags tab). My favorite is the Renee. It fits perfectly in the overhead bins on a plane and I have even fit it under the seat in front of me. Next, pack simple pro-carb snacks at home or stop by a grocery store before you get to your hotel. We simply use Google to find stores nearby. Finally, make the time to prepare ahead, even if you have only five minutes. Preparing your snacks ahead of time or making a game plan for when you arrive to your destination will set you up for success. Here is more information about pro-carbs as well as tips and tricks for the person on-the-go.
