Almost every day I am asked, "how can I lose this weight," or "how do you keep the weight off?" My response is, "I had to change my lifestyle." Sounds easy, right? It's not. I had to make a difficult decision to make major changes to my lifestyle in order to succeed in losing weight and maintaining weight loss. The reason I made these changes was because I had my WGH moment. What’s a WGH moment? A WGH moment is a "What's Gonna Happen" moment.
My WGH moment happened in 2010. My kids were in high school; my marriage was having issues and I was experiencing constant pain in my back, feet and knees. I was over 350 pounds, which was the heaviest I had ever been in my life. I had gotten so unhealthy that I could barely get out of the recliner after watching TV all night long. This is when my WGH moment happened—when my teenage son and daughter had to help me get out of a chair. I was so ashamed and embarrassed. I was once an athlete—competitive at anything I did. And I was fearful that this was where my life was heading. I had my WGH revelation. What's yours? What has to happen in your life to make you realize that you have to change? Is it going to be that moment you can't fit into your pants anymore? Or when you keep buying larger sizes of clothing because nothing fits? Will it be when you get so winded from simply walking up a flight of stairs? Maybe you go to the doctor and he tells you that you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol. Or how about when you finally get diagnosed with diabetes? Or the worst yet, when your kids get diagnosed with it. Remember, what we do has a direct effect on our children. Eventually, we all will have a WGH moment in our lives, it's up to you to make sure you do something about it. Once you have the first WGH moment there will be a second one after that, it’s what's gonna happen so that I can be healthy? What things have to change in your life? The way you look at food and how it will become fuel not just unnecessary eating. Exercise doesn't always mean going to the gym but becoming much more active. Making better choices, on your food, smoking, excessive drinking and what you're feeding your family. All this does not mean going on a diet. A diet is a noun not a verb. Eating a healthy diet of food, not living on a diet. No one wants to live on a diet. Diets sucks! Who wants that? If you make these changes, they all become a part of your WGH. And what's gonna happen is you are going to start feeling better, moving easier, having more energy and even looking better. To wrap this up, when you have that WGH moment, realize it, act on it and start changing your lifestyle. I am forever grateful for my WGH moment and then acting on it, because my life has never been the same since. Remember I told you that changing your lifestyle wasn’t easy? Well I’m reminded of one of my favorite movie quotes. It’s from Tom Hanks in A League Of Their Own and he tells Dottie, the best player in the league this, "It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great." Stay strong, stay focused and never give up! Let's make 2017 the year that changes your life forever!
